After ~20 years of quite poor landline BB through various suppliers (~25Mbps down, ~6Mbps up), NowTV for previous ~4 years, after testing Three 5G speeds on my mobile phone and getting good results (~250+Mbps down, ~30+Mbps up) we now use...

So do you use that setup for watching TV and, if so, how much of your 500GB per month do you go through?

TV is Freeview over aerial, but we use Fire stick in evening on 1080p LG TV, to watch a few YouTube channels and Star Trek Discovery. Better half been watching some online during the day too while off work sick.

We also have ps5 with Plus Premium, but we've not downloaded much in way of new games this month.

Just setup new Windows PC, transferring Steam games from old PC rather than downloading.

One week to go of monthly quota, used ~300GB.

They do 1000GB SIMs, but pretty sure 2.5 years costs more than £90 one-off fee. Equally, they do cheaper deals for quotas such as 25GB and 80GB, which could be handy for mobile on second SIM slot as they are data only.

My brother is looking to use it for watching via the main streaming channels, like iPlayer, 4 on demand etc as well as using his freeview box. Is that possible with this setup? Could he just connect the tv to the router with an ethernet cable?

I'd be willing to bet it is a temporary Intrductory offer, most likely for the first 6 months. Half price for a few months as a joining offer isn't particularly uncommon.




Plusnet always used to have a good reputation, and the few times over the years I have had an issue, their customer service has always been good.

We have been with them for probably around 20 years now. The oldest email I still have from them is from 2010, but we had been with them a while then.

Our Free-Online (part of plusnet) email has been 'migrated' to Greenby. We had no choice, and although it's free at the moment, charges will start next March, so we will be using a gmail instead. This has meant lots of messages to contacts to change the emails. Oh, and our contacts have all been lost in the move to greenby, so had to go to old notes to find contact emails.

Our TP-Link NX200 has two ethernet cable sockets, so does the similar priced AX3000 by looks of things.

You were storing your contacts online, and not in your email program?

My wife uses the plusnet (now Greenby) email, but I have used gmail since before moving to Plusnet.

But since we are with Plusnet for our broadband, it will be free for two years, and after that is only £15 per year, which I think would be outweighed by the inconvenience of her changing - she is not tech savvy at all.

Yeah although many ISPs give free email addresses it isn't and was never a good idea to use them. They gave them for free just to keep people using their services. I would suggest anyone who does to migrate to any other free one using forwarders, Then it is less of a problem when it comes to switching and losing the old email address

Or register your own domain. Costs a little each year but totally under your control and direct the e-mail through whatever service you want at any time and change and your e-mail address(es) remain unchanged.

All my contacts were in the Microsoft mail, but that lost all my free-online content including the contacts. The mail migrated to greenby but the contacts didn't. I raised 2 support tickets to Greenby several weeks ago andthe bot asked several questions. I responded with answers and was informed nobody was available at that time to contact me. The tickets were subsequently closed. I shan't be staying with Greenby (even if they waived the charge.)

Free for 2 years after migrating. It was only in November, when we couldn't use email, that we found we had been migrated in March and nobody had told us.

One thing I always remember (maybe too cynically?) is that most companies offering "free services" are not charities being nice to users by not charging. Often they are marketing ploys - once you have spent the effort setting-up you'll discover some crucial feature only available to paid subscribers, or maybe a "glitch" and support is only avilable to paid subscribers, etc.

Or maybe they view you as the product, analysing your data and pushing ads to you.

Basically "free services" will be making money from you and you just need to appreciate how and when and your dependence.
