....agreed, but it's not just about the speed on the bike either...as soon as you stop there always going to be excessive fluffing about, dilly dallying, unable to make decisions etc....could take an extra week jus tbecause of that! If it's just you then you can take a decision in a split second and move on....be that which route to take , which campsite to head for or which meal etc. Less gossip = more time to tour. 2 people is ideal 3 is max 4 is a crowd and 5 is a non starter i reckon.....20+..OMG....I think I'd rather go on a cruise ship full of sheep.

Just to resurrect this my ideal is to tour with one other person. My tour-mate of choice has got a new partner so I suspect will be much less free, but if you do go with others, you must have the same attitude to simple things like moaning about the price of coffees. It will start to grate pretty fast if your best mate moans at a €3 coffee when you are just happy to pay up.

I am a pretty sociable and social person, so worry slightly about the loneliness but I have done 4 weeks alone and coped... having modern comms to keep in touch with home helps

I would run (cycle) a mile to avoid an organised tour in Europe, although I did have a wonderful two weeks in Baja California with Skedaddle where I met my fave tour-mate (see above)
