Padded shorts for me. I had a knife on my fast commuter, always wore padded bibshorts when riding it, and a spoon on my hardtail and alternate between just bibshorts or with Humvees over the top for trail centres.

In my considered estimation ( after 40 yrs of cycling ) there are those who wish to look the part... lightest bike, all the lycra, gps, 1000 yd stare and a steely grin.
And those who cover mile after mile day after day with a comfy bike and a comfy saddle, the spoon is better than you.

I have the Spoon and never use padded shorts of any kind. Usually a combination of either close fitting boxers or briefs and then heavy cotton shorts or lycra type running tights on top. This is good for rides of 60-100 miles so far with very little soreness. My 10 mile each way commute is a breeze on this saddle and after the 100 mile forum ride I did yesterday I would have had no hesitation to jump straight back in the saddle and ride the 30+ miles home or done the work commute if needed.

You is hard as nailz ! No shorts, for 100 miles.

Thanks to everybody for the replies. Looks like I'll be wearing cycling shorts underneath my jeans or other shorts.

No to Jeans! I wear shorts under my winter tights because they don't have a pad and I can feel the seam in the tights through the pad in the shorts!

As to wearing shorts under shorts - what's that about! If you don't want the Lycra look then go for something like the baggy Endura Humvee shorts instead...

I find baggies or jeans (no padding) fine on my Charge Spoon saddle. I've cycled up to 25 miles in jeans on that saddle and found it to be fine - They saved my knees in a crash on one occasion as well.

It might be that the groove down the middle of the saddle would make jeans less of a killer. I rode 20 miles wearing jeans on a flat-topped saddle and the mid-seam wore a strip out of my perineum - you don't want that to happen, honest you don't!

I wouldn't fancy riding a long distance in jeans anyway because they are too restrictive, heavy and sweaty. As for when it rains ...

This I agree with. They're not the most practical clothes to ride in, however sometimes it is not possible or practical to change at your destination, so it is nice to have a saddle with the ability to comfortably cycle in jeans or casual clothing when you need to.

I've been stuck in a heavy rain/hail storm whilst cycling in jeans before - the rest of the ride was unpleasant at best.

Charge spoon is a very good saddle,i have it on my Spesh Secteur Elite.£24.99p from Chevin Cycles a while back.

the spoon is undoubtedly a good saddler but as for wearing stuff it depends on the covering material on the saddle ,my lycra shorts are kinda slidy on my leather one and i dont like the feeling ,however with my longs on theyr a diff material and feels a lot better ,on my suede one its the other way about !!

Got my Spoon today, but can't test it due to needing a groupset....

Looks great and feels comfortable though.

I pretty much always cycle in cycling kit (padded bib shorts/longs). 500km last week on one of my Spoons (inc a 183km day) and no problemo!

I guess I'll invest in some padded shorts. I'm going to buy some lycra fro the summer anyway.

I'll be riding in casual gear for now though. (shorts, not jeans)

Here's my current Spoon. I just WON a new Spoon too on a competition, lol. I'm keeping this (older) one for my other build though. Highly recommend this saddle to anyone.
