Living right near the Leeds-Liverpool canal I get inundated with requests for donations to cycling/walking charity events. The ones that annoy me are usually workmates in matching lurid T-shirts with snappy slogans printed on, they think I should donate because they have cycled from Leeds to Shipley. Do the whole thing (if able bodied) or don't bother!

But yesterday I got asked in Sainsbury's.........lo and behold there was a worker riding an exercise bike on the Ripon to York "leg". I watched this fiasco a little while, when the worker got tired, usually in 3 or 4 minutes, another would take his place and so it went on................

So they were pretending to be on the path, but were in reality in sainsbury's? LOL.

I wonder if it was because they got tired, or if the management wanting one employee to have all the fun... If it was any of us, I bet we'd happily swap a shift on the tills for a stint on the pedals.

But I agree, some people do seem to expect plaudits for relatively small achievements. But then again, for a lot of people walking a mile is (or seems to be) a big deal. We all know it's possible to cycle 50 or 60 miles or more in a day, but most people think it's astonishing!

I wouldn't ask for sponsorship for a bike ride. I might for a run though, because I'm a crap runner and out of breath after a few minutes. But then, if I trained, I'd be better....

I noticed something advertised locally, a sponsored event where a group of people cycled to paris without leaving Sheffield! Personally, if I'm cycling to Paris, I'm cycling to Paris, not doing it on a stationary bike in Sheffield, lovely though Sheffield is!

Coming from the opposite end of the spectrum. I've had to explain that I wasn't doing a sponsored ride when I've been doing a LEJOG, JOGLE or one of the coast to coast rides and the folk that I've been 'putting right' have been astounded that I was doing the ride for pleasure. Some went as far as suggesting that I should be collecting money en route and implied that I was selfish for not taking advantage of the opportunity to raise money for good causes.

You should strap a bucket to your rack for folk to chuck their change in.

I did Belfast - Dublin - Belfast this year and one of the girls in work said that I should have got sponsorship for it.
I told her that she could give money to charity any time she liked.

I was one of those annoying people this year... coast to coast for  'charidy'

The majority of people I contacted declined to sponsor which is their right & I was totally okay about this, as I decline to sponsor people on a 'regular' basis (as it does seem very 'regular' nowadays...)

If I do a sportive or the yearly 'local' FNRTTC, people assume this must be for charity which still amuses me

Just in case you need to be warned I'm doing a repeat 'charidy' ride in 2 years so I can be put on ignore lists ;)

All part of life rich tapestry :bicycle::bicycle::bicycle:

I'm planning on doing a charity event soon. 1 hour closed circuit time trial to all intents an purposes.

I'm just gonna make a game of it and do a sweepstake on how many laps of the 3k circuit I can do and just get people to donate via just giving and the "winner" gets a bit of cash/something unwanted in my house for their troubles
