On Saturday, June 3rd, at Second Beach, Vancouver, Himalayan Life, a nonprofit, will be hosting its annual fundraising event, The Extra Mile. This is an inspiring in-person event where you can walk or cycle in solidarity with the children in the Himalayas and raise funds for rebuilding their school that was washed away by flooding in June 2021.

Himalayan Life’s mission is to protect, nurture and educate children in the Himalayas. Their projects range from street shelters and homes for children of migrant workers to vocational and sports training, adventure camps, schools and even Nepal’s only recycling plant.

In June 2021, a catastrophic flood occurred in the Yangri Valley of Nepal, destroying several buildings of Himalayan Life’s beloved school, the Yangri Academic Centre (YAC). Many villages and towns in the valley were severely damaged.

With all bridges swept away, some parents of YAC students risked their lives by crossing the raging river with the help of a rope tied around their waists just to tell the teachers and the team not to give up on their kids.

“We won’t give up!” said Daniel Burgi, North Vancouver resident and founder of Himalayan Life, who will be on hand to update everyone on the progress of the new school.

Registration is now open: Choose to cycle 50km, walk 10km or walk 5km. Once the walking and cycling portion is complete, there will be time for refreshments and community interaction.
