I grew up watching football in the 60s, in the glory days of Nobby Styles and Maurice Setters, when quality players were kicked mercilessly by lumbering lumps of centre halves. Modern professional football is much faster, much more skilful and far better to watch.
I remember back in the day when one of the colour supplements devoted its centre spread to a photo of George Best's legs the day after an average Saturday match - absolutely covered in bruises, gouges, scrapes...it was grim. And this happened to him pretty much every time he played.

Go on, tilt your head!
I don't mind football 'hard men' (lol) but one player I really cannot stand is Joey Barton...What a piece.

Football is a weird one for me, I absolutely LOVE playing it but get annoyed watching it...mostly because of all the fairies in the modern game.

I'm with you on this one. He's not looking and doesn't exert any more downward pressure than he would be if just continuing his stride.

Can't agree with you Andy, he has a clear view and his lack of "normal" evasive action speaks volumes. He's taken the "opportunity" to stand on Giroud and Adams is over 6', so he'll be about 13 stone, he doesn't need to exert any downward pressure to cause harm. Still, the FA has charged him and it'll be blown up out of proportion, it was a cowardly act and I wish it had been seen and he'd just got a yellow, now he'll get (probably) a 3 match ban, for not a lot.

How much does it cost to Oldham?

Fair enough. I have only watched it a couple of times and my impression is that he was continuing his natural stride and had no idea where Giroud was. More detailed viewing may convince me that there's more to it than that, which comes back to my original point about media scrutiny of incidents like this which as you say is "not a lot".

I hope he reads Cycle Chat and sees that you've generously weighed him at 13 stone. I'd imagine he'll be chuffed with that! :mrpig:

Yes, a booking would have been better, now it's a "horror" tackle according to one paper. Just had a look and he actually is 13 stone.

My impression is different. I never had the slightest doubt when watching it that he knew exactly what he was doing. Any normal person in a situation like that, aware that a man was grounded beneath them, would be consciously trying to avoid them on the way down. Adam didn't. He quite deliberately landed on someone else's leg. 'Horror tackle' is the usual tabloid twaddle. If he'd stamped down, yes. But it was, nevertheless, thuggery, pure & simple, and in my eye at least a yellow card would've been wrong. If it had been spotted, he should've been off. "There's no place for that on a football field," the pundits would've intoned. And they would've been right.
