Hi all
Bike had its first free service 2 weeks ago and I've only just got out on it today. Noticed 2 of the gears really noisey think it's it's called a chattery type noise.
Should I take it back to lbs ? Should that happen do quick?

I'm a relative newbie to bikes and haven't a clue how to fix

Thanks

Take it back. Which gears are you trying to use? Sometimes an extra nudge to the lever can help as sometimes the chain may not be optimally seated

What bike, cassette, groupset etc?

I'd still take it back, get the LBS to fix

Sound like the gears haven't been indexed properly. If you are not ok sorting yourself then take it back to the store.

Hi it's a cube peloton road compact . Sora 18 speed, gears 10 and 11 are to noisey ones . Before it had a service it was 17 amd 18 that were a little noisey but not this bad.
Sorry I can't offer any more info as I haven't a clue about the cogs etc
Wil give the shop a ring shortly.
Thanks

If you're numbering them 1-9 then 10-18 gears No 10 &11 are ones that you shouldn't really use (big-big) its called cross-chaining, google it.

You'll waste time taking it back to the shop only for them to twiddle the adjuster, which will take them three seconds. It's definitely time to learn to do this yourself as it will happen again soon as the cables settle and wear. Saying you haven't a clue is a cop-out; you need to understand these simple mechanical systems so that you are able to do your own adjustments and servicing and aren't at the mercy of the clowns down at the shop.

You adjust the effective length of the cable and therefore the position of the derailleur relative to the gear teeth by tightening or loosening that barrel adjuster where the cable curves round and enters the rear derailleur. Unscrew it half a turn and see if the chattering noise stops. Then try another half turn. If that doesn't work, try going the other way.

Is the noise coming from the front derailleur? if so you should have a trim function on the front mech, usually a light press on the gear lever

Thanks I had heard of that , but thought it's ok to pop in and out of quickly when required?

Fair point , can't really argue with that , but at the moment I don't have time to look into etc but I will.

I was going by the lbs anyway today and they kindly sorted like you say in a few seconds

What front chain ring are you on when using 10-11 (I assume you are using the small front chainring).

Using big to big and small to small is a no-no. If you are indeed running the little front and the two smaller rear sprockets, then rub will be normal - I'm surprised the shifting ramps haven't tried to lift the chain onto the bigger ring up front.

Sometimes when in the big/big cog combination the chain will rub the front mech causing a chattering (I know its a no no but in the real world this combo does get used), on 105 and above there is a trim facility that moves the front mech inboard by about 3mm to reduce/stop this from happening?

Not much use when the guys got Sora.

You get the same trim on Sora as well. I have always cross chained large-large if you adjust the mechs the rub is minimal, cant say I have noticed any appreciable increase in wear either.
