Barca yes, Also it's nice in Nice, everything in bussing distance and some great b&bs in the hills with pools. From Nice, Monaco is a short, cheap ride for a day out.

I'm off to Croatia in mid September, under £400pp self catering, should be guaranteed good weather, plenty of stuff to do. 2 hour flight from gatwick to Pula

Dubrovnik is a lovely place to visit too

Croatia is also rated as very safe at the moment
It's our 20th anniversary next month and I'm looking for somewhere warm to go for a few days.

I can get 4 nights on the Algarve, B&B for less than £500. I know Portugal and know the nice parts, but it's a longish flight for Europe and I'd need to hire a car really.

All we're looking for really is somewhere nice (by that I mean not a huge hotel but somewhere small) in a quiet area with maybe a bit of history. Not far from the airport and with a pool. The Algarve is the fall-back but if I can find somewhere with a shorter flight all the better. I've done Spain a couple of times but haven't yet found anywhere quiet and traditional. If I could find a place in Spain (shorter flight) I'd go for it. Maybe close to Barcelona?

Any advice?
Possibly out of budget, I cant see prices for November but, an alternative is

Its an amazing place to stay (Christie loved it!!)

Very romantic, approached on a land train across the tidal spit head (beach thing), has its own pub and amazing views.

Its very special (to me at least) and could be a non sunny alternative

A friend owns several cottages on this site: they're all unique / quirky (much like my friend TBH) if you want something a bit different.
