I stayed at an Ibis just round the corner from Gare du Nord a while back - it was OK but nothing special. Fine for an overnighter.
For longer - Citadines in Monparnasse was fine - that's an Apartotel near the Moulin Rouge.
Have you had a look at Tripadviser?

I have slept in many places in Paris Greg - none of which have been 'chaep' on aggregate (once I have woken up and headed to the nearest bar that is.)
Non-violent contact sport excursions have included the cheap 'Bouquet de Montmartre' (Room 30 looks out and towards the South - or used to - towards Montparnasse etc).
Near Abesses Metro, which in turn means that it is very adjacent to Rue Lepic, with the horse butchers, charcuteries and what have you...Cimitere du Montmartre - Museum of Erotica (I know the lovely Mrs Greg gets enough of that with you in your reffing gear + lycra but you never know...), Pigalle, Moulin Rouge. Just behind is Sacre Coeur and Place du Tetre where you can get your portrait sketched as a caricature (no real difference - don't tell me. One bloke used a whole pencil's worth of lead drawing my nose!)
Check out Le Grand Arche at La Defense as well - nice bar in there and a neat trip upwards in a glass lift. Exhibition hall upstairs that has a lot of odd art and brilliant roof terrace from which to spy on Paris.
If you are going on Eurostar, be sure to exit Gare du Nord and go to Aux Villes du Nord bar opposite. See the lady owner in there and say that you are a 'friend of the three Englishmen who come for the wine festival'.
You'll get charged double!
Anyway, there's loads of hotels around there - all decent I reckon.

Paris is great for watching rugby. I was there for the World Cup with a bunch of lads and stayed in the cheapest scabbiest hotel, but it did the job. When I took my wife to the 6 Nations we wanted to stay somewhere a little better but still on a budget. I see you mentioned reffing in the above post. I just started the process of starting reffing. Really looking forward to it, as I can no longer play rugby due to a back injury. You will need to get somewhere booked for the Heineken cup final pretty soon.

get yourself over to www.rugbyrefs.com and introduce yourself to the refs there. Great bunch of guys, and the odd gal, from the global family of rugby refs. Loads of advice and support. I've got no stake in it other than as a happy forum-er there.
