I have a reasonable lock that I use to secure the frame and front wheel but am thinking about getting a second lock for the rear (prefer combination so no risk of losing the key  ). I want something light as I am already lugging one of these around in my backpack (http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Onguard_Doberman_Combo_185cm_Cable_Bike_Lock/5360015432/). I park the bike in busy spots, or a secure underground carpark at work.

You can get very cheap jobbies for under a fiver delivered off eBay - are these even worth considering? Or any other advice for something light. It won't need to be too long (1m max?) This one is a little more but 10mm cable (most cheapies are 8mm)

I will spend up to £20 for something lighter

TIA for any advance ;)

How much is your bike worth?

I would use your current cable on the rear wheel and buy a better one for the frame.

My choice but then I have quite an expensive bike and have been bitten before. If you can't afford to replace the bike secure it properly.

It's a shame you don't have one of these for your main lock. The bracket is ace.

I use a lock I bought from poundland for my second lock lol. The way I see it, if someone sees a beasty D-lock on the bike, the chances of them nicking it is slight, and if they really want to nick the wheel, whatever bolt croppers they have will get through most cable locks out there anyway.

How much does it weigh - and stupid question - how do you use a d-lock to attach the bike to a stand or a lampost?

Not sure on the weight, I will try and weigh it abit later.

You get used to it. It'll fit to most street furniture, although I recommend you lock it to something you know for sure is secure.

Thanks - there is an LBS near my office, will investigate the options at lunchtime (there is also a Wilkinson's for a bargain option)

Is something like this a single solution - d-lock and cable? I presume with these youd can attach frame and both wheels or am I being dim? Still double the weight of my current cable lock!

The ones in Wilkinsons were unsurprisingly ****

This is my local LBS - these locks look good but heavy - I have emailed them to see if I could collect and save on postage! barely worth sending to my office which is 2 minutes away  Much more costly in store - as they say they make no profit from postage, can't see why they'd object!

Looking around, these locks aren't that great...gawd!

A D-lock and cable would be my choice - though it's worth checking to see what you're going to be locking it to, to see if the D-shackle will fit round it and your frame. The cable just winds through the wheels and frame to stop them nicking the wheels.

What about an extension cable like this in conjunction with your existing lock?

I use the Kryptonite version of one of these (as in your last post) in addition to another lock so I can secure both wheels to the frame, the other lock holds the frame to the immovable object.

Depending on where you park your bike and for how long, sometimes the only option is to shell out on a proper hard lock. And that unfortunately means £££ and lbs weight.

Thanks hotmetal

Usually I am locking the bike to a bike stand (only a lampost if no stand handy) and tend to only park it in populated areas for an hour or two max

I am liking the idea of the Kryptonite and cable option, will be a bit heavier than my current cable. I can use that if going to be parking 'safely' or the t'other one if more risk

I have a Crosstrail and a Trek hybrid so a fatter frame than a racing bike but slimmer than an MTB I'd say
