Cheap as, it's only needed for a week or 2 so there's no point in spending that much

Between me, wife and three kids we must have three old phones around the house that can handle emails. Can he not just borrrow someones old phone?

Even if it is a bit tired and needs a charge each night it will do the job for a couple of weeks for free.

Just look at carphonewarehouse and pick up a pay as you go here are some that say they do emails:

Just go onto the site click on pay as you go and order by price lowest first then click through the features and look for the one that do email then pop into you local store and get one. I find that all carphonewarehouse phones are usually inlocked anyway.
