Is it not illegal to go mountain biking on rural footpaths any more then or is that something else?

It would appear (in England) to be, at worst, trespass. In Scotland we have 'right to roam' by virtue of the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003. See here for an outline:

Everyone can enjoy Scotland's outdoor access rights. In summary, some of the main features of the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 are:
  • Everyone has the statutory right of access
  • Access rights apply to all land and inland waters, unless excluded (as below)
  • Access rights are for outdoor recreation, for crossing land and water, and for some educational and commercial purposes
  • Exercising access rights, and managing access land, must be done responsibly.

If the signs say no cycling then you shouldn't be cycling. Sorry to be a spoilsport but we can't just pick and choose which rules we like. You may be considerate of pedestrians but that doesn't mean that everyone has been or will be.

I'll have a rummage in my handbag to see what I can find. Will a receipt from Morrisons do?

Hmm, this really could be a can of worms, becuase a receipt implies purchase, which in turn implies prostitution and we don't quite have the right to do that :headshake:

Also, I doubt he'd have time - he said he only saved 2-3 minutes.

Ohhhhh, thats plenty...might leave a stinging sensation though...not that I'd know about these things, of course

Don't worry about it. You were riding safely and considerately.

I've started riding on pavements very frequently since I got knocked over. I'd rather be break the law and be safe than have to negotiate road conditions that aren't safe for cyclists.

My alleyway does have a no-cycling sign but only at one end.... and is marked on the council cycle routes map. I get through slightly faster (therefore less likely to meet someone) if I glide through on the bike but get off and walk if I meet one. Lots of cyclists do use it, but they don't tend to be the going sort fast, as it isn't that type of alleyway, it's more the type that avoid main roads.

Doesn't matter if there is a no cycling sign or not, if you are the sort to barge your way past pedestrians then you are the sort to ignore the signs.

There are no signs at all of any description.

Thanks for your continued input.
