Depends where it is chewed etc, needle nosed pliers might be the 1st tool I reach for, but without knowing the extent, wouldn't want to advise wrongly.

Don't try and take anything to bits! You can usually just gradually coax it out - if you can get enough out at the lever end and then cut that off you may be able to pull the remnants through the other way?

Thanks guys, I took the shifter off last night and brought it into work. Found a good guide on internet and used some small tools to get the cable out. It was so badly chewed that it wouldnt engage into the lowest gear position so it needed a bit of brute force and ignorance to get it out.
Problem now is that I dont know how much swarf remains in the mech and the plastic guide channels under the hoods are roughed up a bit!

You will have to change to the lowest or hightest gear to make it accessible. I forget which but you should be able to see the end of the cable when you look in behind the hood from outside.
