I saw a child seat mounted on a seatpost beam rack.

Not right, surely?

The rack was flexing as dad went over bumps, giving the child a nice compliant ride.

But I wouldn't trust a beam rack to carry any more than my sandwiches.

I'm not a fan of any of those child carriers on bikes or behind them but then I'm not the one putting my child in them so whats it got to do with me

It was probably a seat tube mounted kids seat. They do flex rather a lot.

Thanks - I didn't know there was such a thing.

The bike was a newish Boardman hybrid.

It is to be hoped Halfords used the correct rack, but we all know their staff knowledge is at best variable.

I'm no elf'n'safety zealot, but would much prefer a child seat to be mounted on a traditional rack with supporting legs.

The Tubus on my Rose is built like a brick outhouse and is rated at 'about 40kg' - I think junior would be safer on one of those.

A couple of weeks ago, I bought a beam rack from Tesco for £18, to stick on my MTB so I could fit panniers, for use on holiday in France. (As a shopping bike and general runaround, not as a touring bike....)

The rack works well, and the sticker on it says it's rated for 25 kilos max weight, but it also says it is not suitable for use with a child seat..... and there's no way I would want to use it as a seat base.
