Someone chucked a can of Strongbow at me the other week, but missed.
I had a full bottle of coke thrown at me once and they didn't miss!!!, and it hurt
sad.gif
but i feel it is something you have to get use to as it happen to every one.
If you are moving down the road at 10 mph and some one throws something at you at 60 mph then in theory, it is moving at 50 mph when it hits
ohmy.gif
, dose not mater how small or big, just the shock of "what the hell" could be enough to make you unsteady for a split second and in this day and age, all it takes is a split second and a mm and all hell could break loose

Luckily it was just a plastic bottle but I had a half full bottle of coke thrown at me the day before the Etape Caledonia it burst open my ankle, fortunately apart from the bloody mess and stained socks it didn't do any real damage.

All you can do is accept they're complete peanuts and that they obviously have nothing better to do with their lives. Once you've got your SD card and it happens again, report them for assault and see what comes of it. They might think twice if PC Plod comes around and gives them a warning at the very least.

I've only ever had a packet of wotsits thrown at me. To make things worse, I was hungry, and didn't manage to even catch one. They scarpered pretty quick.

^^ This!!!

I have had a few snowballs thrown at me and whilst the kids thought it was really funny - I was on a dual carriageway and there was a bus following me really close!

I managed to stay on but if I had wobbled off the bus would NOT have been able to avoid riding over me!

I feel your pain OP - it's shocking that people think its okay to do this sort of thing!!!

In fairness to the kids I can understand that behaviour.
After all, it's funny to hit someone with a snowball, and it's a challenge "let's see who can hit the moving target". Also, what kid even thinks about consequences of their actions?
Obviously I'm not agreeing with their actions, and glad nothing too serious happened, but I can see why they might find it funny.

Adults in cars on the other hand just confuses me. Don't get me wrong, I've been 'stuck' behind a cyclist and been annoyed / impatient, but I've never once thought of driving my car into them, or lobbing something at them.

Some people are just odd.

Chips in Bickley. They wound the window up before I could throw them back. Fish and chip shop style chips, not your average burger chain French fries. Gosh, this is making me feel hungry....

smear the chips over the windscreen?

I've had, what I think, was WD40 sprayed at me as I was overtaken I've also been hit over the head with a large plastic bottle of cider or similar which broke my helmet - they were walking.

I've also had a taxi come alongside me to my left ( I was in the right hand lane to turn right) asking me what I'm doing and do I have a death wish as he moves into the right hand lane, forcing me into oncoming traffic.

I don't have a lot of tolerance room for this. Having something thrown at you while cycling is plain scary; doesn't matter who does it or what they throw, they make the choice to do it and if anything was to happen as a result, they deserve to face the consequences IMO.

Only twice had something thrown at me. The first was years ago when I was riding home from school. I was almost at the top of a hill when one of the other kids threw lemonade. We were about 13 and I think he was trying to be funny but hadn't really thought it through. I fell off my bike and when he saw how angry I was, he scarpered before I could even get back up.

I've also had a lad deliberately leap out in front of me when I was zipping downhill but I'm not sure if that counts as throwing something.

The second time I wasn't on my bike but had instead made the terrible mistake of taking a stroll in Wichita Falls, Texas. (In fairness, only one other vehicle even honked at me during my trip and that time I was even on a proper pavement.) I'd asked at the hotel for directions to the bank but the staff seemed confused when I told them I was on foot. No worries, I thought. It's three minutes by car, that's not far at all. I can explore. I was walking on a 2 metre wide strip of grass with car parks and fast food outlets to my left and the main road to my right. It was actually really nice to walk along until a truck screamed past and I distinctly heard the shout of "Freak!" and a strawberry milkshake sailed in front of me. It was pretty scary and I can't imagine how much worse it would have / could have been if I were on my bike.

Posted this on here a few times, so aplogies if you've read it before...but yeah I've had something chucked at me.

I was on one of my first bike rides as an adult, just thinking about commuting. I was heading slightly downhill back into the village on a national speedlimit road, doing about 30. I was 'hunkered down' on the drops. There was a car coming the opposite direction, couple of hundred yards out of a 40mph zone. I heard a shout and felt something hit my left bicep/shoulder.

Luckily I managed to stop OK. Turned out it was an egg. Now when you consider that I'd been on the drops, this must have been aimed at my head, just missing...

So I'm heading one way at 30, they're heading the other at 40mph minimum. Ignoring the speed of the throw itself, I reckon 70mph impact? Or to put it in more practical terms, it took 2 weeks for the bruise to disappear.

The good thing about this was that this moron decided to turn round a way up the road and drive back to shout and gloat. Which was handy as I was onto a 999 operator and able to read out his registration etc...

I heard back a couple of weeks later that he'd been picked up on a pile of charges, including this, and was pleading guilty to dangerous driving.
