Has anybody converted CHM doc's to PDF?

I'm fully aware that CHM files can contain scripts just as nasty as .exe files.

I've downloaded a couple of techie books in CHM format and would like to convert them to PDFs (preferably tagged) to hopefully avoid any sneaky bits of code.

Can anybody recommend conversion software - hopefully freeware but otherwise cheap.

Cheers

I don't know many specifics of the CHM format but, if you use Firefox for browsing (and you should!) then you can get CHM Reader to open the files in Firefox.

To create the PDF files, if you install one of the free PDF creators (I use CutePDF) as a virtual printer driver, you should be able to "print" the CHM file to a PDF.

I don't think that will keep the hyper-links, though. I don't know of a free PDF creator which does retain the hyper-links, other than Adobe Acrobat and that's a lot of money.

Typing this, I've just noticed that the word "Firefox" isn't in Firefox's dictionary. There's irony.

You could decompile the help files back into html using htmlhelp workshop. Hhw.exe then decompile from the file menu. You could then convert to pdf as Norm has suggested above or just take a gander through to look for dodgy scripts.

Thanks for that.

I'll try CutePDF to start with as it seems the simplest but I'll probably also try HTMLHELP Workshop when I get a chance (funny enough the manuals are HTML and Javascript).
