Sorry Dave, should have opened the link for the Cube, saw the model name & assumed it was a road/racing bike (was being lazy).
I like Cubes by the way.
Choice between 2 bikes........opinions wanted.

OH......I thought they were all steel framed bikes........no???
So......looking at those options which frame would be the most relaxed?
How does one go about hypothetically building a bike so as to work out a cost?

Nope, I have
1) carbon road bike (pearson Pave)
2) steel roadbike (Genesis Equilibrium)
3) alu/carbon single speed with drops (Pearson Touche)
4) alu/carbon disc braked flatbar (Whyte Cambridge)
I knew what bike I wanted but I didn't want the off the peg spec on offer, so I bought all the required parts (lots of shopping around) and a friend put it all together for me. I documented everything in an Excel spreadsheet. The cost probably did end up a little more than the off the peg, but I got what I wanted and better components (like wheels) to boot
Otherwise, you can call Pearson, Condor, other small bespoke type manufacturers and tell them what you want, how much you want to spend and let them spec and build it
In terms of how relaxed a frame is comes down to the geometry, the material, the quality of that material, the components and most importantly you!

Have you had a look at Rose Bikes?
I have had a good look around their website and they probably have a bike to suit everyone, also you don't have to just accept the stock bike, you can change wheels, saddle, stem, etc as you wish.
Excellent value for money and have heard very good reports re their bikes and customer service, also they have a contact in the UK. Also the bike weights specified are impressively light, for aluminium as well as carbon.

The Cube is a lot of bike for £900 - I can't see anything wrong with it or why you would need to spend any more money for what you need it for.

The OP wants a bike for tow paths and light trails.
The Cube has Kojak tyres which won't be ideal.
Easy enough to change to something with a shallow tread.
I am "leaning" that way. Although at my age (67) what I "need" to spend as against what I "can" spend" is not too much of an issue...............it is which bike performs best and (as you say) gives me what I need.
Neither bike will be in stock till January/February so I will test both out at that time............but I do appreciate everyones thoughts & comments.
No..........not looked at them but have heard of them.
TBH I will only buy a bike that I can see/touch/feel/ride and generally "play with"........but I will go to thier web site.

There is a UK contact for Rose bikes, a chap called Finlay, who I read somewhere is very helpful, found an email address fin@rosebikes.co.uk
Believe you can test drive by appointment, although depends on location, think they are in WIltshire..
I got hold of a copy of last years Rose catalogue and was impressed, although like yourself would like to try before buying, happy hunting, it's part of the fun!

Although once again the tyres aren't really up to cinder tracks and tow paths.
Adding three kilos gives you suspension and some nice, podgy tyres which would do paths and light trails.

And get an LBS to built your flatbar spec, e.g. in Cheshire

Cracking a solo.
There is a resonable possibility that in the next few months I'll be looking at a new bike, at the moment I'm hovering around two options. Although I'm sure I will, I'm dreading starting the which bike thread as I know I'll have loads of links to equally gorgeous bikes posted and I'll end up far more confused than when I started

Go ride them and see which works best for you. The shiniest spec doesn't always give you the best bang for your buck, as Triban 3 and Trance X4 owners will confirm.
