I don't find either option particularly inspiring, but given the brand and sizing the CX bike seems like the obvious choice.

If you're open to vintage steel do you keep an eye on the usual sales sites? There are steel bikes around from the '90s (or later from custom builders) with the axle spacing / general ability to take modern groupsets. They're not very common but do sometimes come up at reasonable prices.

EDIT: Something like this perhaps; particulars notwithstanding..

... or this..

They are both nice

bit of an update , after a bit of fettling im leaning more to not building as the wiegh frame is very tatty and the forks have a fair bit of powdery metal in exposed parts and the carrera has always been a size to big .

@cyberknight - what type of frame and what's your budget?

Saw this earlier and the seller's sent me a £10 lower offer - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/226656325026 . I'm just trying to work out what the size is in 'real' numbers but here has it as a 'Small'. It's a Battaglin Faster frameset from 2016 - https://prompt.cc/battaglin_faster.aspx - T1000 carbon, light and should result in a 7-8.5kg bike.

If it doesn't appeal, the frameset might come my way.

very nice , go for it as i will not get it past mrs ck , i know im having a new car from work soon so thats another expense so i cant justify splashing any cash about .

Well t cut the frame on the weigh and see how it goes , as its a winter bike it doesnt need to be pristine as long as i can get the dodgy bits ok .
Bought a BB as its the only part i dont have in stock and added the chainset , swapped the bars .The current wheel set has narrow rims so i could do with looking for something wider eventually although i do have set of wheels on another bike that would do the job meaning i could run the cx tyres .
Saddle height set for me and as its a level top tube it does look on the large side even though i measured the top tube and its ok
