I am look for a bit of assistance in choosing a new bike! I am relatively new to cycling and currently have a cheap Raleigh Manic Mountain Bike, as most of my cycling is on roads and pathways my MTB is a bit cumbersome and heavy. I have been looking at Hybrid books but as I am a novice have suddenly got all these choices:-
1) Brand - Have been looking at GT Tachyon 2 and Carrera Crossfire 2 (budget is around £300)
2) V-Brakes or Disc Brakes or Hydraulic Disc
3) Front Suspension or no suspension
4) Sizes of tyres, used to chunky MTB tyres so a bit wary of using thin tyres
5) Type of gears, Shimano Acera, Tourney, Altus, etc.

I am 6'0 and 103kg

Any advice????

Where are you riding most? On vs off road (% wise)? Generally suspension is to be avoided on budget bikes as it's poor quality and heavy. It sounds like you aren't tackling rough stuff or mud, so get rigid forks

Hydraulic discs are better but cost more, V brakes are fine for every day use (especially with upgraded pads)

Gearing, doesn't really matter at this price point but get trigger rather than twist shifters

28mm-32mm tyres as usually found on road going hybrids aren't really thin

Perhaps look for a higher specced lightly used second hand bike? I got my hybrid for £400, from an RRP of £900, been ridden twice

Thanks Vickster, I would say it would be around 80% road and if it I am off-road it is pretty gentle tracks.

I have read on a few forums about going for rigid forks if most of the riding is done on the roads/paths. I am not sure about the Carrera brand as I have also read a few bad reviews on them, the GT seems to be a better brand?? Don't know if it is worthwhile saving up a bit instead and going for a Boardman??
