Even Oxbridge don't have it as a requirement. At the school I go to, which is very high achieving (but a state school, mind), not many people in our year are continuing all 4 subjects (or going from 5 to 4).

Didn't they actually come out and actively discourage it because people were taking silly number of A levels?

Quite a few people i know have taken 5 AS levels and will take four A levels.

Quite a lot of people I know said they would, and actually ended up taking 3 A2s in the end...

A lot of people i know will do it, but then it is a high achieving college.

Plenty of people do four or more A2s. It's at private schools that have the resources it's actually quite common. Some state schools/colleges have the inclination but not that many.

Things are changing, the 4th A-level was normally Further Maths that few state schools/colleges had the calibre of staff or resources to teach. Now 4th A-levels are more common but people might slot on geography or an ology.

(@kovu) What you sayin bout my school?
But, more seriously, that's not a factor in my case...

I am saying it is shockingly bad!
No not really, I wouldn't take 4 A-levels in any case, imagine the work, no social life, no time for the bike!

Oxford and Cambridge admissions tutors encourage students to go for 3 good A levels. As far as I know they only ever offer based on 3. They want depth not breadth. It worked for my nipper, who is the only student in his oxford college this year who went to a comprehensive (it's in the genes!).

I was considering starting with 5, but then I thought that there wasn't any point. I'm now doing 3 at A2, and am fine on uni offers so I'm not too bothered

Im still in the AS level. So one year behind you it seems. I took 4, but wouldn't take four into next year! Need to think about uni again as well.

At GCSE level I really wouldn't worry!! Do the ones you'll enjoy the most, unless she's planning on going to Cambridge it doesn't really matter. All of them sound like reasonable GCSEs. I really enjoyed DT (resistant materials) and did product design for A level.

Just get her to pick the ones she'll enjoy...or already enjoys.
