i thought it was something very specific: the passing of the shortest day.

summer's coming, folks!

That's spherical danglies I'm afraid (and don't bother with the links to the 101 webpages that argue it's all an amalgam of pagan rituals)! The timing was half-inched but that's about it...

Trees, tinsel, presents, wreaths, gluttony, drinking, yule log, santa... Please link to Jesus's birth.

There is nothing about my devout Catholic family's Christmas traditions that are inherently religious except attending mass and a cardboard crib/creche/manger.

If you were a real extreme atheist you would go the service and pinch a few valuable bits out the church. Think your a bit of a part timer.

I'm sorry but they shouldn't entertain christening a bastard. If something's worth doing then do it properly. At least the child has a step mum they'll never meet.

Thank you for reiterating the fact that my daughter is a bastard, It really is the most hateful and evil word. I am a christian and I had my bastard daughter baptised as the 'sin' of having her was mine and not hers.

You on the other hand are showing the worst aspects of human nature by being judgmental, cruel and subjecting others to your twisted sense of morality. Please don't go to the Christening, your attitude and sense of self righteousness will no doubt put a cloud on what is a lovely day for a family.

I thought attitudes like yours belonged in a time gone by, but sadly I was wrong. May I just say I pity you and your narrow-minded judgmental opinion of others.

Surely by now, if you never go to any christenings ever, no one would ever expect you to attend. In that case, no explanation would be needed, unless you really really want to give one in this specific instance.
But the invites keep coming. *sigh*

Do we still have bastard children?

There are so many couples living together these days, who are not married. Myself included. I would think there is a high percentage of children born out of wedlock.
Isnt the term outdated and old fashioned and only used to make a negative point?

When I was leaving church with my daughter a few weeks after she was Christened, one of the old witches of the village turned to another old witch and said ' I can't believe the Vicar baptised a bastard'. This was in 1999, but the women in question were then in their 70's. Until today when I read the post I quoted, I too thought those attitudes were relics of the past, sadly I have been proved wrong.
