Do you have neighbours that have Christmas lights on their house that you could see from Mars and putting the National Grid under severe strain? A huge Homer Simpson and family on the roof or Santa, Rudolph and sleigh balancing on the ridge tiles with the Seven dwarfs and snowmen packed into the front garden glowing brightly frorm dusk til dawn?

A blessing or monstrosity? Should these show offs be encouraged and applauded or told to stop and served with injunctions to make them take them down? Why aren't they happy with a Christmas tree in the front window and a Christmas wreath on the front door?

If someone wants to put up a mega display of Christmas lights and get enjoyment from seeing them I see no problem. Personally I like to see lights at this time of the year and it helps to brighten the dull and dark evenings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't have a problem with other people doing it ... when the kids were small and walking home after picking them up from nursery school it used to be one of those things that would get them to walk in the cold, dark and wet. Though I admit none of my near neighbours have any. What I find more annoying are those lights that have a strobbing flash mode ... I prefer the more subtle twinkling^_^ - it would drive me made if I lived opposite one of those.

If it's tastefully done, I don't mind. But a house near me always seems to insist in filling every single square inch of garden space with something bright and tacky, usually completely unco-ordinated with whatever is next to it and it looks a complete mess.

Somewhere on the interweb, probably YouTube, there is a house completely covered in Christmas lights and the neighbour has not tried to compete, they just have the word "Ditto" in lights with an arrow pointing to the light show.

Mrs Beanz and I bussed it back from town yesterday evening and passing lots of houses with Christmas lights on as you might expect, we found the one with the nicest of the lot was a semi with a single string of coloured lanterns across the door and front window. Tasteful, effective and evocative of the 'old style' Christmas lights we all loved before the disco electonics took over.

there's a house near my parents who do the whole over the top house and garden display. They also have a charity box for St John's Hospice... which is the icing on the cake as it stops neighbours competing

I suppose if you do want to put up loads of lights, you should let the people opposite/next door know, so that they can at least get some sleep. They don't keep them on all night, right? Surely.

The energy issue has generally subsided with the use of LED lights, but there's one house I often walk past where they appear to have used the improvement to just increase the total brightness!

Glad I don't live next door - they seem to be on all night and it's like daylight. A timeswitch would be in order.

Apart from the posible annoyance I suppose it's just tasteless but harmless.
