Not a Christmas carol or hymn . It's an advent hymn . ( or maybe a carol) but definitely an advent one. TMN to somebody!

It is my favourite one and heralds the start of advent at Chez subaqua when it is heard on the Beeb on advent Sunday.

Similar for Once in Royal Davids City on Christmas Eve with " Carols from Kings" on BBC2 being the start of Christmas. And hearing John 1: 1 (KJV not the NIV garbage( yes it comes from a big book of fantasy stories)) with a mince pie and a large sherry meaning Christmas has properly arrived .

I hated Christmas as a kid , as it meant a lot of arguments between parents and families and days of silence where nobody would speak to anybody. Really didn't help keeping the fecking Labrador away!! My wife introduced me to some of her families traditions and I started to enjoy Christmas.

Anyway enough rambling on

Fairytale of New York is nothing without Kirsty MacColl - please give her credit for it. Shane MacGowan did:

"Kirsty knew exactly the right measure of viciousness and femininity and romance to put into it and she had a very strong character and it came across in a big way... In operas, if you have a double aria, it's what the woman does that really matters. The man lies, the woman tells the truth."

I also love the way that she became involved in this. She was married to Trevor Horn of ZTT fame at the time and he produced the record at the studio at their house. He asked Kirsty to come into the studio to do the vocal just to help work on the balance of the music, with the intention of replacing her with someone younger and more credible on the final cut. Shane was so blown away by her vocal performance he refused point-blank to have her replaced despite repeated entreaties from his management.

none of 'em (bah humbug and all that)....
Hurrah!!
Man after my own heart

That said, the Phil Spector Chr**tmas Album is a blinder, mainly due to the production
Crystals, Ronnettes, etc......

However, as a show, to go with it
The Brian Setzer Orchestra???
Love the hot-rod flamed Bass, & drum-set (cocktail set??) - quite apart from his gorgeous Gretsch

If you want something that could be adopted as a modern Carol, & wonderfully written

Top of the Tree goes to.................
