Will be working with the exception of Xmas Eve and the day itself which will be spent with grown up children and grandaughter, before we beat a hasty retreat home for some peace and a few quiet drinks.

After talking about it for a number of years fed up with the commercialism me and the mrs are scaling right down and just having token presents max value £20 and no mountain of food.

I live about 250 miles from my family at the moment, so it's my family time. I like both of my sisters, and get along very well with my folks. For some reason I love Christmas, it brings out the child in me - do wish that there was a GF of SamNichols to spend it with though. Boo.

Now, New Years I do hate.

Does anyone fancy sodding off on a bike-ride over christmas? Somewhere with no mobile reception, and at least 250 miles away from my M-I-L, S-I-L (x2), my mother, my fat useless brother, my turd of a part-time B-I-L and all the associated stress and shoot that goes with them?

We have had constant rows this evening, with various relations ringing and trying to get Mrs User76 and I to feel guilty. My M-I-L has even said, "It'll probably be my last christmas...." I don't think I helped when I asked for it in writing, possibly a little too loud:biggrin:

And I thought I'd got problems !! (see Help!!!!) ROFPMSL !!

My sister is single! She claims that she never meets any men. She also claims that any men I introduce her to are cyclists, so that's you probably bombed out. Sorry, just a thought.

I only do it for the kids now, otherwise I would probably try to get away. I fell out with my mother shortly before she died and whilst we went to her for her last Xmas (she died four days later) I wish I had repaired what was broken. Much of what happened lied at the feet of my other brothers and sisters who had lived like maggots (excuse the pun) off my parents for years. We don't speak much now - not surprising when your brother calls you a **** for wanting probate to be done by the book.

So for the last four years I have been having my in-laws (who have been becoming increasingly crotchety as they grow older) and my s-i-l and her partner. Xmas day last year the partner and m-i-l have an enormous row; cue silent Xmas lunch and has refused this year to be in the same room as the in-laws. So this year we will be having our first Xmas alone with the in-laws.

So Maggot, not a lot different really. I would leave the decision to Mrs Maggott since it's her mother. Maybe it might be worthwhile reminding her (even if you don't like her mother) that it may well be her last Xmas and she should do the honourable thing and go to/have her mother. Time is finite and as a daughter, especially, she may regret not doing this in later years.

Had you asked 5-7 years ago, I would have said I had a family like SamNichols. Things change.

Chris my Dad had EXACTLY the same reaction when my Gran died. Irreparable damage caused by idiocy. Definitely brings out the putrid side of people.

Maggot, take pleasure from the fact that as mothers-in-law go, I have the archetypal dragon.

At a meal in a restaurant mid October there, for her long-suffering husband's birthday we were sat there; me, wife, minitetes x 2, m-i-l, f-i-l, b-i-l, b-i-l's partner and the partner's kid. Conversation turns to xmas. m-i-l says it will be nice to have everyone in for xmas this year, they'll get all the trimmings in special decorations up etc etc, and (I KID YOU NOT, WITHOUT A TRACE OF HUMOUR) then says "It's just a shame Paul* has to come". I was furious. The only thing stopping me getting up there and then and heading for the door with the minitetes was it would have upset Mrs Tete.

Dreading it.

I USED to have a Sam opinion of xmas too. Maybe Sam you have to get yourself some inlaws to properly relate. Don't rush that GF thing along too hastily.

Sounds all too familar Tete. My m-i-l has always held up as a God the first boyfriend of my s-i-l. He ran off with a work colleague! Even now she would rather have him there than either me or my s-i-l's partner. So Big Bang last year came as no surprise, except to my m-i-l who is hurt and upset. I even paid for the in-laws holiday this year and neither of them said thank you. Why am I having them for Xmas this year?!

I could exchange similar stories with you all day long but I fear I would burst into flames in my office due to anger and fury at the abhorrent treatment we have to put up with!
