I think Norm is along the right lines. The X in Xmas is an from an old language, i could remember which one so Norm probably has it. So it's not an off the wall abbreviation. however, what kind of knob pronounces it Xmas??? it should always be pronounced Christmas.

Unless your Birmingham City Council, who once tried to change it to "winterval" because of the large muslim community. Funnily enough, the muslim community didn't like it, so they changed it back

idiots.

personally, i always write Christmas.

Yes i remember that, the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard. But then again we are talking about Birmingham City council.

I use Christmas as a term for the celebrations but I am a winter solstice person.
That's good enough reason for two party days.

Leeds City Council changed from black bin bags to grey bin bags in the pre-wheelie bin era because they didn't want to 'dis' the black community.

If you look into the origin of "Xmas", I think you'll discover something which may be even older than America.

The X (or Chi in Greek) is possibly even one of the derivations of the word Christ, with the Chi Rho (XR from the Greek) being used as one of the very earliest christograms.

I still don't like "Xmas", though that's mainly because it's current usage (mostly in advertising over the past 100+ years) is all about commercialism where the shortened form allows for reduced costs.

ta for doing that. i was going to post what you did .

I always assumed it was just a modern abbreviation, like motor cross and motor-x... but we live and learn.

I tend to write xmas if its a note for myself because it's quicker innit... Christmas with a capitol C if it's something others are going to read

People who say ex-mas have probably done it since childhood and is just a bad habit, like pronouncing the x in Grand Prix

"Xmas" as others have pointed out was medieval shorthand for Mass said at X(ch)P(ro), hence the correct abbreviation should be "XP MASS", or "X'MASS" or, if you are being picky " X'mas' ", so if you are going to short the shortened version, at least make it correct with a apostrophy after the X and the final S.

Merry X'mas' !
