re maps, I have a superb app (Android but works with iPhone). 100% free. Download the base app, then each country you need (England, Scotland Wales etc). Some other countires such as France are in regions, but Spain is one download Do all that over wifi before you leave. Then you have free offline mapping needing zero data access. All Open Street Map based. Not a navigation tool (does not provide routing) but if you are in the middle of nowhere you can swithc on gps and zoom right in to within a few metres. For free offline satnav I use Navfree

Hi Jay, sounds really useful. Is the mapping app also Navfree? Thanks for the help.

My bike's a compact so no granny gear. Is this a deal breaker? Would I be better off on a borrowed aluminium commuter that cost £160 new but came with a granny gear? Bearing in mind how much weight I'll have to carry? I'm kind of hoping it's doable
Rather than change the bike, if you don't like the gearing - why not change the gearing?

I think that bike has 50/34 chainset and 11-25 cassette and a Sora short cage rear mech. The linked (Wiggle) site didn't have details, but Evans has details for the same bike, so I used that.

That gives you about a 35.5" bottom gear by my reckoning (other results are available). You could probably put a bigger big sprocket at the back, but to do so you would probably need to replace the rear mech.

A bit of searching suggests that the Sora short cage has a capacity of 31T. As your current setup (50/34, 11-25) uses 30T, there's not much room for manoevre. But a quick search reveals that the long cage Sora can handle 37T and sprockets of 11-32. Source.
So by my reckoning you could put an 11-32 cassette on the back if you moved to a long cage RD-3500, at a cost of about £25 for the mech £15 for the cassette and £10 for a new chain. (Less if you shop around).

This would give you a bottom gear of 28" as against your current 35", which is a big difference.

Using a Shimano road mech means no faffing about and worrying about cable pulls and so on. It should be fine with the existing shifters.

But don't take my word for it, as I'm an eejit. If you do decide to do this, get some proper advice. Also check out this thread if you're thinking of doing this. There are people there who actually know what they are on about.

by granny gear he probably means a triple. As someone who loves easier gears, for the extra weigh involved I would go for the triple. Certainly when toruing you are never to going to be cursing that it is all just too easy!\

I agree ... an uber low bottom gear with a granny ring on a triple would be ideal. But more faff and more expensive.

My thoughts were that you could get a lower bottom gear to grind up the hills on the double chainset, with relatively litte fettling, and at a pretty low cost. Maybe not the uber low crawler that you'd get with a triple, but something significantly lower than the rather sporty bottom gear on the bike at the moment.

It would of course be possible to fit a triple, but then it starts getting more difficult/expensive because you need a new chainset (£60?? No idea) and also a new front shifter/brake lever possibly to deal with the 3 rings (£? no idea), as well as a new rear mech, cassette and chain. And by the time you've started to do all this then maybe you'd ask yourself whether you'd be better off looking for a new bike.

Or he could "do a Lance Armstrong", (no ... not like that! ) by bodging on a down-tube shifter to shift the front (if that's possible), and the ordinary brifter to operate the back, saving the need to replace the left shifter.

Jay Clock, what is the name of the map app for android you mention? It sounds ideal and I would be interested in adding it to the phone and tablet before we leave. Thanks.

Your local LBS will easily fit a smaller chainset at the front and that will give you lower gears. For laden touring I think you will find a 20 inch bottom gear necessary unless you like walking. I know this.
And FWIW I agree with @frank9755 and I'd rather wipe my arse with a badger than spend three months riding around the UK. Spain has roads that are better, emptier, prettier and is much cheaper. France has campsites to die for. The Netherlands has cycling routes of fantastic beauty. Even the Belgian coast is gorgeous. Blackpool? Pah.

no prob. the App is amazing particualrly if you know pretty much where you are but not 100% certain. GPS on my phone can be slow, but by zooming around the app I generally find where I am

Got it installed. I went for the free lite version (I'm mean). Any real point in going for the Pro? Other than supporting the writers I suppose.

not that I can see. allows you to search for names, and also allows you to bookmark locations. Make sure you download all of Englnad Wales and Scotland as they are separate.

It is so good. Just looking at Kyle of Lochalsh. Shows shops, ATM, postboxes, and ALL FREE!

Hi guys,

can't thank enough for the gears discussion - impressive amount of research going into helping some moron out! Definitely a bit lost in all the discussion about gear ratios and so on - no idea how much I'd feel the difference between a 28" and a 20" but it sounds large. I'll head into my LBS and see if they have ideas about replacing the rear D or the chainset. Hadn't really considered replacing components as I figured it would get prohibitively expensive but I'd probably be happy to spend £50 or so if it means I'll be getting off and pushing less. thanks for Maps With Me too, looks great.

Cheers
