I'd be wary with a £4k budget, at that amount you aren't looking at main dealers, it's either private sellers who, let's face it wouldn't be selling if it was running perfectly or 'back street' dealers who won't do the prep the main dealers will do.

Nothing against Citroen or Peugeot but most large family type cars have had a hard life by the time they get to that price.

There are some cheap cars around at the moment if you are ok with larger engines? 2.0 petrols are good value but not great on fuel and have large road tax amounts.

I would also look at the ford cmax, good value car or the Golf plus, a very underrated car if a bit smaller than the Picasso.

It can make sense to 'u'p your budget by using a loan and stretch your term a little. Yeah, you pay back more but if you end up with a newer, more reliable car with lower running costs then overall it will probably work out the same, especially when you factor in resale value.

The 50-55 plate as in the photo above, great interior room n flexibility with individual move/remove rear seats.
Engine decent, issues with the individual's coils going and get te timing belt replaced at 55k.
Newer models, diesel engines are brilliant, handle well for heir size and the spec is great - never had a prob in the last 4 years with c4gp and c4 picassos.

The auto -EGS- gearbox it SH!T, avoid it like the plague

we have had a couple of renault scenics both petrol and diesel no problems at all the scenic deisel service was all i ever did with it,the petrol ignition coils under warranty(known fault) Peugeot make sure warranty is sound can be plagued with electrics, ecu went on my 3008 but a damm good motor

The ecu would have been on warranty though I'm guessing? It's not something we have seen in our neck of the woods but I guess there's always one or two.

I would say have a look at a Peugeot 307 or 308 SW. The SW has three movable rear seats.
and a panoramic glass roof

Amen to that. I test drove one a couple of years ago and it was horrible to drive. Very hesitant and IMO potentially dangerous when pulling out of junctions.

Although I doubt that box would be an option in Lisa's budget TBH, phew

I'll second that emotion. The 3008 has proved a real hit for Peugeot. We aren't seeing any 'common' issues at all with them and it's a terrifically practical car and a great car to drive as well.

Can I have another one please JK?

Shame, that has an ecu issue written all over it! It all depends on who your dealer is and how good they are.

It also depends on what you can physically diagnose too.

What I mean is even though you may know there's a problem, the car may not exhibit it all the time, garages can only diagnose what they can see, feel and hear, and what the diagnostic equipment tells them.

Eg: "When I start the car sometimes a, b or c doesn't work"

If this isn't stored as a fault code that the diag PC can read, or if the fault doesn't happen at the garage, then it can take time to diagnose the problem.

Garages are also governed by the manufacturer when it comes to warranty issues, and they don't have a pot of gold to throw at cars, hence they need to ensure the right diagnosis to get the customer sorted with minimal fuss while ensuring money is not wasting fitting the wrong parts in an attempt to fix it.

There will always be the occasional case that proves tricky, just glad you got yours sorted.

User, I think you may have found they had a broken front spring, very common on a lot of modern cars, Citroen corrected the problem on the vehicle. It is certainly nothing to worry about.

It was a common problem on the early models & Citroen did a recall & fitted a cup to stop the broken spring going into the tyre causing blowouts, but on the latter models (ie my wifes 2005 model) they dont have the cup fitted & the spring can go through the tyre  Luckily my wife was only reversing on the drive when hers went.
I dont like the car, but the wife loves it & has had no major issues in 12 months running

I had a 1.8 petrol SX Picasso for five years or so, it was a fab family car - the five adult-sized seats were very good. Every now & then it would blow a bulb behind the dashboard display panel, so I'd unscrew that & put a new one in.

There was little to touch it for value for money/space. It was bigger in the back than the Laguna estate it replaced.

Bike rack on the back no problem, but I did have to take the fuse out for the rear wiper though because if you have been using the wipers & put the car in reverse, it would automatically wipe the rear screen.

We now have a C4 Grand picasso which took 2 bikes inside, the other day.
