Barcelona - predictable, but the Sagrada Famillia is worth the trip on its own.

Reykjavik - fantastic and very different. You need to hire a car, but the roads are empty and all the main sights (Geyser, pfingvilla, the Blue Lagoon etc) are all within an hours drive. Iceland used to be expensive, but since they screwed up their economy, prices for hotels, food and fuel are comparable to Britain. Easyjet fly there too now, so that has pulled down the cost on all airlines. Short break packages are available from several companies.

If you've not been to Iceland, it's well worth it.
There's a ruddy brilliant waterfall out near the geyser too.

Wroclaw, Polska.
Cheap flights/hotels/beer, but not yet overrun with stag-dos and brothels.
I found it far more interesting than Krakow and Prague - it was (as Breslau) the 3rd largest German city in 1939, only to become Polish in the post war carve-up - the mass migrations that followed, the communist legacy etc make it a utterly fascinating place for a short break.

I've always wanted to visit Auchwitz...what was it like?

Worth the trip.

I would say it was done properly, which might sound a bit odd, but it sets out to give the history of the site as a barracks before it became the work camp and before the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp was built nearby (free bus ride to get you from the main site to Birkenau as part of your tour) It shows the scale on which 'the final solution' was being carried out, leaving you in no doubt that this went 'right to the top' as it were, as opposed to 'some renegade officers' as some theories have suggested over the years.

I don't think it too harrowing for a family with secondary school children to go round, younger children might have a few nightmares after if something they saw or heard might have struck a chord with them, but talking with them about it should reassure them that it's not about to happen to them - if you get what I mean.
