For me I'm torn between the potteries of Stoke v the bicycles of Coventry. And the bombed ruins of the old cathedral. And my old university. And Alvis cars. Yes, I think I will plump for Coventry.

Hmm interesting choices for that list  What exactly do they mean by city of culture? If you're from one of these places, I'm sure your city is wonderful and all....

I think it's one of those competitions where some ponces from elsewhere look down their noses at a number of cities across the country, decide one of them could do with a decent coffee shop and they then vote as to which one gets it.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
On 1 January 2017, the Hull event opened with a fireworks display over the river Humber and a series of sound and light installations collectively known as Made in Hull, which reportedly attracted more than 25,000 visitors.[25][26] By the end of the first week, the BBC was reporting that 342,000 people had participated in the opening events.[27] The event included multimedia sound and light projections onto landmark buildings in the city's Victoria Square[28] as well as a display of Hullywood Icons featuring local people recreating famous scenes from film.[29]
...plus £3m from the Lottery. Not a bad return on a small investment in making a bid.

My vote is with Swansea, on the grounds of shameless favouritism.

Stoke - if only for the New Vic and their company. I saw "Beryl" there, cleverly restaged to work in the round, and "Cyrano" a terrific retelling of the old tale. The cultural quarter is starting to take off, and City of Culture could give it a real boost.
