I see you're in my neck of the woods, am just a wee bit further north. 
Nothing wrong with Claris. I run an 11-30 Claris setup on my Wiggins road bike, which is, other than for two hills (one in Ely, one in Witcham) plenty.
Discs are a real bonus if you're heading out onto muddy fen roads, though. And when you're cycling through Cambridge and have to deal with doozy pedestrians stepping into the road without looking. DAMHIKT...
Can't advise on the bike as they're all too big for me. But get the one that makes you smile. That's the *really* important bit
