hi all,

My mates got a trek 1.1 with 8spd Claris - would you need to replace the whole groupset to get to 9 or 10 speed?

An LBS reckoned a simple cassette dhange was all that was needed...

You need to replace the shifters, cassette and probably the rear derailleur. You don't need to replace the crankset or front derailleur.

A simple cassette change to 9 or 10 would give you a bike with only one or two working gears. You need shifters that match the cassette to have a successful upgrade.

Definitely new shifters and cassette. Probably new rear derailleur, it depends I'm not sure if Claris has the same pull ratios as tiagra and above.

Be worth just getting a whole new groupset, but the real question is, what's wrong with the current setup?

I thought so, just wondered if Shim had some sort of magic I wasnt aware of.
