I got a pair of Loakes in a sale about five years ago. £75, which felt like a fortune to me. Quite possibly the best £75 I've ever spent. They're on their third or fourth sole & heels and they still look and feel fantastic.

When our shoeshop in town here got taken over they had a clearance sale and I snapped up a pair of Loake semi-brogue Oxford for £25

I've still got a pair of brothel creepers I bought from Robot on the Kings Road on my 18th birthday!

Edit: that was more than 25 years ago

Brotherl Creepers...I have photos of my dad wearing them

I left school 25yrs ago.... I have had this size feet for 33yrs
(remeber my mum buying the Polys, when I first started 'Big' school, so reckon that would make them about 30yrs old)

Clarkes shoes used to be made in Ireland! Best shoes for the money have to be Loakes/Church/Barker and good ol' John Whites. Leather shoes are always best as they let your feet breathe and they mould better around you feet for comfort!

When at primary school, Mum always bought us Clarks shoes, but they were seen as being really uncool, so I was slagged off all the time because I was wearing 'sensible boring shoes', instead of wearing some really expensive pair of 'cool' trainers with the 'latest' air pump or whatever the heck was the fashion that week.

I always remember hearing things like 'Nike is 'in, and Reebok was 'out', and I would sit there and think to myself

'Who says? ....no, seriously, WHO SAYS?'

It never seemed to have any logic to it, and I strongly suspect that half of it was just made up. The to**ers.
As you can tell, I never became a 'Fashion Icon'.

At secondary, I also remember getting slagged off for wearing new Doc Martin shoes because they were 'too shiny' (and I had obviously been up since 6 that morning polishing them for inspection) - the people slagging me off were, of course, wearing trainers which I knew fine well wouldn't last out the term never mind the year

If you are really, truly controlled by fashion, then you need to go play with the traffic.

Brings to mind a story I once heard about a crop of Coventry fans who came to a game at Loftus Road all togged up in their oh-so cool Fila gear, only to be greeted by the QPRfans with chants of: "My dog sleeps on Fila, my dog sleeps on Fila, La la la la, La la la la." They slunk home, and the following week not a fan was sporting Fila...

I cycle past the old Clarks desert boot factory on the way to work, it is now a car showroom/car hire/training college. It always seemed strange to me that they manufactured the desert boot in Weston-super-Mare instead of the main factory, perhaps it was the large expanse of sand on the beach .....

My dad only ever had two pairs of shoes from the day he was married (excluding his work boots & wellies). His"Good black ones" and his "Good brown ones."
Both Clarks, both kept in his wardrobe underneath soft dusters, with shoe trees fitted, and polished daily (sometimes twice).

I sometimes wonder of this is where I get my wonky attitude to being well dressed comes from? IMO, you can be wearing a bespoke Armani suit, but if you've got crappy or dirty shoes on, why bother - the overall look will be terrible anyway.
