Hi,
your Claud looks like a Claud Butler version of a late 50's, early 60's Holdsworth Hurricane, Claud had been taken over and the Claud models were just mid range Holdsworth clones. I suspect you might find a faint '1' in front of the 4 digits you can see.
Thanks Terry

Thanks @CBGuy I've had a mystery frame that I couldn't quite put down to a Claud Butler. Mine had the 4 digit serial number 9195 (didn't realise earlier CBS only had 4 digits). Again. Thought the frame to be late 70s early 80s. It has the pencil thin rear stays, curved rear brake bridge but no oiler port, only over cable guides on top of the BB. Pictures attached. I think I still have some pictures of the frame before having it powder coated but there were no original parts on it to help date it.

Hi Tony,

Looks compatible with a Challenge frame with Prugnat 62s lugs, pump pegs under TT and lamp boss. Serial #9195 (edge of BB often seen) predicts to mid c.1961. Vagner fork crown is not the more embellished version seen on other Challenge models but is seen as in Challenge #11998 predicted to c.1962. I think this looks like a Nervex BB, although light not good on pic details. Is the Nervex name with numbers stamped on BB? It is unusual it has no oiler if a 1961. Prior to 1965 oiler was as a rule placed on non drive side top of BB - unless a FD cable guide made this impossible.

I do wonder if that FD cable guide might been a later add on as looks a later type. Was frame as acquired looking like a repaint? If guide a later addition would explain oiler hole being obscured. Wonder if might be evidence for an oiler hole if you ever look inside your BB? Also if you look at European #7500 c.1960 (basically a Challenge frame as well) it has a FD cable guide and appears to be a shorter version (unlike yours) similar to the FD cable guide and in this situation oiler was instead placed on underside of BB. I think a FD cable guide on BB probably was less common in early 60's as most FD's were either still rod operated or had a cable housing stop incorporated in derailleur with a DT cable stop brazed on near BB.

Hi Doug,
Thanks for the info. The cable guides were there when I got it and I can't remember if there was a hole in the bb. There is no mention of nervex on the bb. I'm guessing it may have been repainted before I got it as it didn't have the head badge on it.

Once again thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Thanks for followup and I'm glad info and prediction is of some help. Are you alright with my recording your serial and pics on my Flickr site? Doug

Sure I'm fine with that. I will also dig out the other 2 CB frames I Have. One is a super coureur and the other is an unknown lugless one.
