Whats the best way of cleaning wheel rims? Is soapy water and a cloth enough or should I be doing a bit more.

I use soapy water to help degrease/clean. I clean the brake pads too.

I await the replies you receive with interest ... I've just been using rain water and a scrubbing brush, regularly. And also a toothbrush on the brake block.

If they are really crappy - like after a week of wet rides - car alloy wheel cleaner is really quick on the rims and gives great results (like wonder wheels). Only use it on the MTB, not the road bikes - just water and car shampoo.

Ground up metal - which the brakes shift round and round and round apparently according to my LBS, who told me to keep them cleaner.

You should get an Evertonian to lick them or failing that careful use of an alloy cleaner and a Summerdays toothbrush.

I've genuinely never ever washed a wheel rim in my entire life

And I'd never washed a chain until a few months ago, granted the chain and gears are running silky smooth now they're cleaned and oiled

got no real problem with the brakes though
