Cleanliness/lubrication contradiction

I've been told off by another bike shop for my bike maintenance, this time because the oil has got everywhere (and supposedly was responsible for the premature death of my back tyre). I've cleaned it up with degreaser and wiped it off with old newspapers, but now I'm left with a problem.

When I lubricate in future, do I need to both degrease the old stuff away and then lubricate with new stuff?

How do you keep it clean after you've lubricated, just wipe it down with (in my case) newspapers afterwards?

How can I keep using rags every time I do it (I.e. every Sunday)? After using a rag once it basically has to be binned.

Nah it doesn't. Try it, keep an old rag somewhere out of the way and you'll see

Don't use too much oil is the answer. Or a specialist chain lube, or diesel (very sparingly). Either way when the lube is applied give it a few minutes to penetrate the chain and wipe off the surplus. A rag will last for ages just hidden away or in a plastic bag.
You're lucky! When I were a lad we dreamed of rags, had to lick off excess chain lube and spit it back into the can...(cont'd P.94 with three other old Yorkshiremen, acknowledgements to M Python)

An old cotton t shirt does. Does not have to be clean. It gets oily but still does the job. They last quite a long time.

I just bung oily rags in the wash, with a large gloop of swarfega.

I always get excited when my wife decides our/ the kids shower towels are past it- I get a whole bag of new rags for the bike.
You'd get a good few months of mickling out of a normal size towel!

+1 They do a decent job. Oh, and my personal preference is chainsaw oil. Cheap, readily available and blended not to fling off the chain (provided you use it sparingly and wipe, wipe, wipe off the excess as per the Mickle method).
