Cleats...how long do they last and what can you do to preserve them?

SPD pedals come in single-sided road versions as well as double-sided MTB. MTB shoes, without the spikes, double very well as touring shoes. If you're just commuting/casual riding there are SPD compatible smart/casual shoes that are wearable off the bike.

Thanks for the advice, think I might investigate into MTB shoes as I'm in the market for some new ones. Unfortunately no pics as I've thrown them away but I tend to replace cleats every 2-3months so I now know that it is something I'm doing probably if some of you have 20k miles without replacing them. Either that and some covers with electrical tape (which may be the cheaper alternative)
