After contributing the 'James Hunt 40' thread, I was thinking about another fantastic driver of the past;
Ari Vatanen
Absolutely incredible!!
As much as we all loved Guy Martins escapade on the Pikes Peak Hill-Climb, in the TV programme 'Speed'
This run by the Finnish legend is something else!!!
For a start the road was unpaved back then, & simply dirt/rock, & he recorded 10:47
Plus, at one point, he's driving one handed, shielding his eyes from the Sun
On that road!!!
"Chapeau!!, Ari"
Fast-forward to 2013, & Sebastian Loab had a go
On a paved road
With oxygen mask, as it's a damned high mountain
Heck!!!, the race starts at almost 10,000 feet above sea-level
Loeb recorded 8.13
With 870+BHP, against Vatanens 600BHP
Plus presumably various electronic aids, & that tarmac surface
I contest that Vatanens was a far superior feat
