Thanks for that David. I think I'd better take it fairly easy as I'm asking ankles, knees and hips.....in fact my entire legs to do things they haven't done for years. Probably best to avoid screwing them up completely although I am going to persevere with the clip ins.

Don't use the standard Shimano cleats that came with the pedals, use SH56 MTB SPD Multi Release cleats (http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Shimano-SH56-MTB-SPD-Cleats-multi-release_30406.htm) there is plenty of rotation allowed for your feet to find a natural position, and you never really have to think about unclipping, they just do. Even when you have an unexpected stop and you start having a 'moment' these will unclip fast enough in a panic to get your foot to the ground before your elbow does.

Best thing I did with bikes following someones advice on getting them.

They look very similar to the ones that came with the shoes. I'll have a look in the box and see if I can find out which type I have at the moment and I'm sure there are subtle differences but I don't know enough atm to differentiate. Thanks for the recommendation, I've set the Shimano page to my favourites.

Check your cleats aren't the SH51, they are the standard Shimano cleats - http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-spd-mtb-cleats/. The multi release ones are Sh56.
