Hi all. Just after a bit of advice. Shoes got soaked on Friday. I have over shoes but find them a pain to use.
The smell of damp in the shoes is still lingering. Any ideas how I can counter this?
TIA

Rather than full overshoes, have you tried the half ones, that cover the front of the shoe.

I haven't, but they look a lot easier to put on.

Is there something equivalent to pedal covers which old time cyclists used to use with toeclips to keep wind and water off their shoes? They also had the advantage that they stayed on the bike, and didn't add to the bulk of your shoes.

I'm assuming they smell like tomcat pee. Only way to stop the stench is dry properly and if possible stick out in full son for a bit. I used overshoes for years but swapped to proper waterproof boots, still not 100% but pretty good. Not sure what kind of bike and riding you we're using. Biggest improvement i had on my roadbike to stop wet feet was full mudguards.

When I used to do a lot of walking in mountains and stuff like that
then the recommended method of drying your shoes/boots properly
was to stuff the shoes with newspaper for a few hours as soon as you took them off

that absorbed the wetness and after that it was just a matter of drying them in front of a fire/radiator

Mudguards are a necessity for all-weather commuting.

If you're cycling a daily commute, then a good pair of proper winter boots is a worthwhile investment - even though they're not cheap.

I managed to get a cheap pair spd boots from Planet X, I quite like them. I don't use them for the commute though as I prefer to walk round the office in my spd shoes and my current commute isn't long enough to get any benefits from the boots,

Put the in the washing machine with all your damp cycling gear. Dry them out on the radiator for the next day. Best have several pairs if commuting.
