Just had an unexpected near miss this morning.

I was riding along a dead straight cycle path with open grass on the right and a segregated footpath on my left, when I clocked a guy in a high viz jacket riding a bike loaded with panniers riding towards me. I was wearing high viz stuff too. We were both very visible, to each other and everyone else.

As he was clearly wider than me I thought it wise to ride at the left edge of the path, but didnt want to cross into the footpath side as a jogger was just ahead of me. I assumed he would move from the very centre of the lane to pass. He didn't; he kept going like I wasn't even there. I got quite a shock when our elbows clipped each other as he passed. <insert expletive here>. Luckily we didn't connect more, as his momentum with all the weight he was carrying could easily have tipped one or both of us off our bikes.

I can get on with my day now... TY

Shared path etiquette is a potential minefield. ;)

The Bristol to Bath path long ago lost the line down the middle and the matchstick men and bicycles and we use the full width of the path - as if it was a minor road.

On the B-B path, the jogger would technically be on his side of the path and it would be up to him to either stop, or slow right down and establish a path right down the middle - slowing down to an appropriate speed for closely passing a pedestrian - albeit a sporty one. In my case I won't actually turn the pedals.

could have been worse.

Ouch, indeed... the first guy is probably not far off what happened to me. Luckily both riders seem to be wearing helmets, but that looks like it was a nasty crash.

I'm sure EdinburghFixed enjoys bumping into friends when he's out riding, but bumping into strangers is something else. Touche!
