Here's my supermarket extreme bean review:

1. Sainsbury premium - ok to good.
2. Sainsbury original - rubbish
3. Sainsbury columbian - rubbish
4. Sainsbury decaff - good, for decaff, but impossible to get locally
5. Sainsbury kenyan - possibly might taste slightly of coffee at double strength but I doubt it.
6 Tesco colombian supremo - very good
7. Tesco java sumatra - good
8. Waitrose sumatra mandheling - good but a bit over-roasted for me. Taylors used to do a similarly named product (the name covers a range of coffee types) which was my favourite but they've stopped doing it.
9. Waitrose monsooned malabaar - good
10. Waitrose peru decaff - good, for decaff.

Shops selling fresh roast coffee or even just specialist ranges seem to be dwindling but well worth trying if you can get it. Until it shut, I just worked my way through small packs of every bean type they had in our local one. Internet sites often roast to order but they don't always do sample packs so it can be a bit risky buying a large pack untested.

barista cyclista?
Sorry Fab F and all, I'm the real barista ciclista - with an i, not a y ^_^italian style, reason being that I am a mobile coffee unit operator  (what's that???) trained in costa, starbucks and traditional italian coffee machines - I'm also Italian :becool:
They do indeed train us to keep opened coffee beans packs in the fridge, for not more than 24 hours, in a sealed tub/bag.
I have never used a manual grinder, could not advice, but the best blend at home for my taste is "Lavazza" think you can buy it in any supermarket, it's usually the most expensive!
Don't really grind beans at home, cannae be bothered as I've got coffee on tap at work, but when it takes my fancy I use a small hob coffee machine.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
It's more the fridge than the freezer to be fair, but the best barista I've met in Sheffield does neither- so I respect his opinion.
The best barista in Sheffield probably has a turnover which means he doesn't need to. For the rest of us, who take several weeks to get through a kilo or two, keeping the beans in the freezer adds a few days to the effective shelf-life.

Possibly, not much different from keeping in sealed container though. The real enemy is light, and the cold will change the oilyness of the beans too.

I bought a rather smart Gaggia burr grinder about a year ago to support my coffee addiction. I do love it. The problem I find is that I can rarely get good coffee here in UK. I am over here for a couple of months and by the time I have found a coffee shop, I am on the road again. Still, by May I will be established back in Edinburgh with my own coffee making equipment.

Best coffee I ever tasted was in a motorway services in France, it was divinely aromatic and it started my love affair with fresh coffee.

Now I buy from the excellent Booths supermarkets but sadly people not living in NW England can't enjoy that privilege!

caffe' nero is not bad now in the uk, but in Edinburgh there's lots of good privately run coffee shops.
