Pre pandemic before inflation set in and the chain coffee stores were still reasonably cheap, I didnt mind dropping three quid or so on their fairly average tasting coffee. Nero was the best of the bunch for me followed by Starbucks and then Costa. Five years on I don't feel inclined to drop five quid on the same cup of "bland" unless I'm on the motorway and there isn't an alternative.

Starbucks is terrible. They had a franchise in our Uni building. Only lasted a year. Got shut down and the existing cafe was opened with locally sourced coffee. Sales have shot up.

I hate it when at any cafe and you order a coffee to see it comes out of a 'vending machine' and they are charging £4 plus.

I'll stick with my Mocha pots and the Dolce Gusto pod machine.

At my preferred coffee stop today, chatting to one of the regular customers who made the remark 'coffee is coffee' which as all he ever drinks is expresso is an odd thing to say.

Not sure if I have mentioned this before

But I met up with someone I used to work with and we went for a cuppa and a catch up

Turns out her daughter was a manager at a Nero shop
She went there for coffee - but ONLY when her daughter was on duty

apparently the coffee the rest of the time was rubbish - but when she was on then it was great

The difference being that she got in early and cleaned the pipes and tube properly

Which explains a lot

We've got a mobile coffee trailer on the Middlewood Way in Marple that serves excellent coffee. I try and call in when I'm passing - usually on my way home. It's only 20 minutes from home, but makes a nice stop. I don't think many 'chains' are actually that good - much prefer the independent coffee shops.

Fortunately we have a really nice independent coffee chain with a shop locally, I’d much rather give them my money than the huge Coca Cola conglomerate.

Same here, I have three indies near me, so fortunately I don't have to use chains. Also, contrary to popular belief, a coffee and cake is 20% or so cheaper than any chain.

I believe climate change is having a negative effect on coffee harvests. I heard a soundbite on the radio last week some "scientist" said coffee cultivation may not be possible 50 years from now.

There is a nice cafe on the high street here - just a few doors down from the LBS

The coffee is noce and the people are nice and the profits don;t go to some big company

and there is a new Cafe boat on the canal - same sort of thing but better views

I like independents, though Im quite happy to use the chains too, because abit like local bike shops, it only really work if youve got good ones, they arent automatically good just because theyre an independent, just as a chain isnt automatically bad because its a chain..

and maybe its just an aspect of the Suffolk coast, where coffee stops are more tourist and 2nd home focussed than say focussed on just product/service, youll often find that you are paying through the nose for something that might be well made/delicious (if youre lucky), but is it really value ? and I dont think its the cost of coffee beans doing it.

as I can get a large latte at Costa for roughly £4.50, which is basically a pint, 20floz. whereas youll go to some of these independents and youll be paying £4.50 for something thats more like a regular, or even small in size in some cases, and you think is this really worth it ?

theres a new one I want to try when the weather stops being so gloomy, thats just opened, I want to support it as its in an area thats devoid of good cafe stops, but its £4.35 for a latte, £5ish for a bacon bap, their menu doesnt show any cake options yet though they show pictures of flapjacks on their social media. But thats like £10 for a cafe stop and it might just be medium size coffee and a slice of bacon in a roll.

Same with pubs, unless the beer lines are cleaned on a regular basis with the correct cleaning fluids, poor tasting beer is the inevitable result.
It's just the customer actually proving that the establishment isn't following a good hygiene protocol that's the issue if the beer tastes suspect.

Is keeping the pipes/lines clean as important in coffee making...or even a thing? What pipes require cleaning in a coffee machine other than the steam outlet which froths the milk?

I must admit to never having cleaned any pipes in my coffee machines at home over the past 20 years even though I must have made over 10000 cups in that time.
