I haven't read the whole thread in detail, so apologies if I am off on a tangent.

Everyone would have noticed the constantly creeping upwards prices of coffee, and everything food related in cafe's.

I always do my very best to visit an independent when out and about walking, or on my bike, in fact I will be visiting one tomorrow afternoon, which is sadly closing for good on Sunday :-(

A friend who moved to Italy gifted us a spare Nespresso machine, so excitedly I bought a load of pods, but when we got the machine it had a major leak, and despite various online guides, and buying a selection of tools I was unable to resurrect it.
By then I was of course committed, so managed to buy a L'Or machine on offer with 100 capsules, and after cashback that meant the machine theoretically cost ~£17.
I tend to buy L'Or pods, but find the super cheap Aldi and Lidl ones are perfectly decent as well, sometimes as little as 10p a cup.

We've had it pretty much a year now, and love it - instead of having maybe 5 or 6 cheap instant coffees, I just find I need 1, or occasionally 2, cups of coffee from the machine - it's brilliant for those with not shed loads of time on their hands.
I'd say if you do have time, then a mocha machine is the way to go.

Additionally I bought a rechargeable portable coffee machine that accepts the same pods for £40, it either heats the water for you, or you can pour heated water into it, to get virtually instant decent coffee to drink, and then it uses much less battery.
That saves us quite a bit of money when we go out, and has already paid for itself to be fair.
Coffee and cake for our small family of 3 will be approaching £25 with a tip, not inconsiderable.

Even two minutes at minimum wage is only 40 odd pence. Let's be extremely generous and say the cost to produce, all in, is a quid.

I based my comment on a phoen I heard many years ago
some local station was having a phone in about how you have got something for nothing

a local lad rang in and said him and his mates went to the local McDOnalds a few times a week and ordered 4 burgers and large fries at the drink thru
then when they parked up in the car park with their "food" they took one box of fries out and went in and complained that it was one missing

Free Food!!!

A manager from another McDonalds rang in saaying
"Yea Lads - Good one
so every week you pay xx.xx to get 4 burgers and large fries and then scam another one
so you pay us xx.xx and get 1 fries for free
do you know how much we loose by that?
it is a few pence
that's all

and for that you come and pay us full price several times a week

if you get kicked out please come to my place - I will never stop you as you would be my most profitable customers!!"

Staff costs are weird - they need the staff there anyway so in a way the cost is fixed
but it is also variable because it can be increased or lowered

anyway - I'll stop woffling
which I seem to have been doing a lot today
probably because I have been banned fro going for a ride as it is too hot!!

Wow ! Fascinating thread. I live in France and this morning we rode into town to the bar before work. We take a seat on the terrace which is clean and comfortable. The proprietor arrived to take our order (although he really just checked as he knows our order and often has it ready when he sees us approaching.). We ordered 2 café allongés (Long coffee but not quite the swimming pool of weak black stuff that passes as Americano in the UK). Plus 2 croissants. He pops down a couple of doors to collect the freshly baked croissants from the boulangerie and brings the lot to our table. 2 coffees and 2 croissants plus little speculoes biscuits on the side all for less than 5€. There is another couple there who bring their own breakfast and eat it while drinking his coffee, the bars never worry about people eating their own food inside or outside their establishments.

It's a different world! No wonder Brits like holidaying abroad. I've broadened my horizons and started to go into more cafes lately. I can conclude that we don't really do hospitality very well. At least half the staff seem like they don't want to be there, and/or would rather you weren't there either!

It the equivalent of 10p. But sadly 10p does not have purchasing power it did.

I had a student job that paid 15p per hour. But beer cost less than 10p a pint.

Gwylan, you had to slave away for c40 minutes to earn enough (ignoring income tax etc) to buy a pint.

Based on current minimum hourly rates (again ignoring tax etc) and with current average price of a pint in UK of £5.44:

- 21 and older, slave away for c27 minutes.
- 18-20, c33 minutes (presume closest to your student days.
- Under 18 and Apprentices, c43 minutes.

Blimey mate, it were tough back in the day. 😀
