What about a bean to cup machine? Or is it outside your price range? Otherwise an electric grinder and cafetiere would be good.
Without breaking the bank, get a stove top pot. Best product I've ever bought for coffee, after reading a few glowing reviews from here. Dead simple, brews in 5 minutes, easy to vary strength, and usually enough for two cups of coffee. Ideal for the morning !
So, a moka pot then? Or are there different types of stove top pots?
Get a Handpresso. The price is abit steep but the coffee is good.

This, or whatever size variant thereof would suit your friend. Accept no substitutes. Makes impeccable coffe, and the wee feller on the side puts a spring in your step:

The ones at that link look quite nice, but for my money, I'd always prefer to go for 'the original'. There's a good reason they haven't changed in 50 years...Yeah I've seen them, they seem to have more of a reputation than the ones I was looking at... http://www.caffeginevra.co.uk/collections/coffee-makers
Although I've been told the coffee beans on the Ginerva site are amazing. I'm thinking grinder and moka pot as a gift.
