Didn't they try some of the tinned stuff from Scott's fatal expedition & it was ok? Seem to remember a mention of it...
On the other hand, they reckon Franklin's ill-fated NorthWest Passage expedition all died of lead poisoning from their new-fangled tinned pemmican...

The only food that doesn't spoil is honey.
Even the jars of honey that was stored alongside Tutankhamen's treasure was still found to be edible after all those millennia.

Contrary to what others have said above, tinned dried Colemans mustard powder does not go off.

I have even had twelve year old Heinz tomato ketchup, which has lost its vibrant red colouring and gone brown. Still good.

Honey doesnt go off agreed but it will solidify if left which can be reversed.

My oldest was a pot of Ambrosia custard that was 16 years over date, along with the one-portion Xmas pud that was with it at the back of the cupboard (14 years over date).
The Xmas pud was fine; the custard was edible, but definitely not as good as it should have been.

I had a sachet of French mustard in a Whetherspoons once about 25 years ago. It actually tasted like poo, and I'm not exaggerating. I didn't check the date as I'd already disposed of the sachet, but it must have been off. I've tried French mustard since and it does taste ick, but not as bad as that was!

Barnet,
The sachets of mustard/sauce/mayonnaise do go off, maybe it's something in the manufacture process.
The stuff in jars and bottles Lasts for years.
