A very short article here from our local rag extolling just how lax our officers are at nabbing pavement cyclists vs neighbouring districts.

Is crime very, very low in coventry so you want to pour large resources into this?

The reason for this is that those of us who cycle in Cov are a rare species, I rarely see other cyclists when riding in Cov.

I'm not surprised that so many cyclists are riding on Cov's pavements, given that the pothole density there seems to have hit critical mass. When I was down in January, in places the holes were taking up more space than the remaining tarmac!

I've just located my 12-year-old copy of the Coventry cycle map. I was going to post something sarcastic along the lines of 'Coventry's cycle paths are just white lines on pavements anyway', as this is my recollection from when I last went there. But in fact the map shows very few real routes at all, except allocated space on the bridges and subways across the ringroad.

It seems that Coventry's attitude to constructing cyclepaths is mirrored in its efforts to fine errant cyclists. This is also true of Leicestershire, in that it has a higher rate of prosecutions, but (in Leicester at least) a very good cycle infrastructure.

I do see a lot of pavement cyclists in Cov, however I second the fact that the roads are full of potholes - you can tell when you cross the border from the warwickshire highway responsibility area, to the cov zone in that the number of potholes increases dramatically. On my commute from Leicester to Cov, I encounter about 97% of the potholes I have to avoid in the 3km of cycling i do in cov than in the other 34km through leicestershire/warwickshire countryside - the roads are terrible. Ive reported a fair few and you're lucky if they fix them withiin a year. Its the least cycle friendly city ive encountered. Having said that im seeing moire cycle commutewrs down the coventry road than i did when i started cycling to work 5 years back....

On my patch, just for cycling on the pavement.......no chance of getting a ticket....riding to quickly, recklessly, texting, no hands or doing something dangerous...yes ticket will be issued but just for riding on a foot path...NO I have much bigger fish to fry!
