My dad bought a brand new Ducati 900S in similar circumstances in Bahrain. A local playboy had taken it for a test ride, dropped it and done a runner. The damage was largely cosmetic. The upshot is, there's a brand new unregistered Duke in the garage at home which my dad paid around £600 for.
