Anyone cycling in Tenerife this winter be aware of a potentially lethal hazard in the village of Tijico Bajo - a drain cover laid across the road with slots in line with the direction of travel, wide enough to take a road bike tyre. Two of my cycling companions were hospitalized because of this last week - legal action is being taken.

Road bike bunny hop time!
That's just crazy now I know it's not funny but there must be some locals waiting for an unexpectant roadie to come hurtling through there village.

Not just on Tenerife - I came off on one on a corner on Gran Canaria. I've never seen them anywhere else, even in mainland Spain, and it took me completely by surprise. Now that I know that they exist I take them at an angle.

thats quite common in Tenerife !!my parents used to have a home there, and the road leading to their house had 3 or 4 of those grates, had to make a seriously angled ride over them.

if you look in the bottom right corner of the photo you'll see a part of the drain where two pieces join that have no slits in that would, at a slower speed, be wide enough to ride over it.

It's not intended as provision for a cyclist, but would allow passage.
