@HB_Dude I keep recommending this but I think it makes a perfect commuter. Single chainring and 8 speed cassette. Gives a great range of gears and nice and low maintenance. Plus comes already fitted with mudguards.

Option C. But...
Depends on the terrain. and the age of the riders knees.
There has been talk of a geared fixed on here
Scene from Braveheart. If I remember correctly, the dude's knees were shot.

Nice bike but I think I'd need something a bit quicker.....My LBS have offered me a great deal on a Marin that beats the Charge hands down, thanks for the input though, if I didn't have so far to go or was urban commuting that would be a great machine

It's not bad for speed. I don't consider myself a fast rider by any means but I did this ride this morning with very gusty winds and included a cat 4 climb.

Here for rides.
SRAM Torpedo?
no disc mount. limited cog sizes. sloppy backlashtastic fixed mode. about as well sealed as a sturmey two speed hub. needs a flat head screw-driver. and the bloke in my LBS said I'd die* if I rode one. but then he hates me and despises the bikes I build and ride.

*I think he meant I'd kill it.
