Commuting Bike Advice

I have to say that a Specialized Tricross is going to be my next Ride2Work purchase. I love my Langster, but where I'm moving to is too hilly for a singlespeed now, so that will be sold in due course. The Tricross will be my weekend toy and occasional shop-trip/pub tool, but for my commute (using the train) you can't beat a Brommie.
Getting back to the OP, a quick scan of Evan's website for hybrid bikes shows that (for between £350-400) you can get excellent bikes from the likes of Specialized, Scott, Kona, Ridgeback, Dawes and Globe. All should be ultra-reliable and come in a variety of guises whether it be fast, sit-up-and-beg leisurely or load-carrying. You don't have to spend loads and your £600 voucher will allow you to add some nice extras or waterproof clothing.

Thanks again all. I've just taken Thursday off work to get over to Evans in Castleford and then a tour of all the other bike shops in Leeds. Should give me a good idea of what I can get and what I want/need!

I'm watching this with interest, being in a very similar position.

The Dawes Tanami 2009 is looking like a good match for me http://www.mailordercycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m1b0s18p8332

Approx 7 miles commute each way each day, not looking to break any world records, but the exercise is doing me good.
Will see if I can get a sensible price from my lbs - want to try some, and am prepared to pay a bit over internet prices for the service.

Given the importance of reliability I'd spare some thoughts for a Hubgear. They've less 'flash' factor, and just work without quite as much need for frequent fiddling.
